4 best Game of Thrones filming locations to visit in Dubrovnik, Croatia
HBO's production crew 1st came to Dubrovnik couple of years ago. Part of seasons two, three and four– including the sea battle at Blackwater where Stannis Baratheon attempts to dethrone King Joffrey and the fight scene between the Hound and Prince Oberyn, was filmed in this historic Croatian town. The nearby seaside cities of Sibenik and Split have as well been used as venues for the 5th season. Unlike in previous seasons filming in Dubrovnik was limited exclusively to theOld Town and included, two days at Hotel Argentina, a beachfront resort with beautiful gardens.
The town is well matched to its alter ego as capital of King's Landing. Its fortified battlements, amazing gates, bridges, ancient constructions and gothic cultural attractions appear to have leapt directly from the pages of George Martin's stories !
1. Pile Gate
Pile Gate is an impressive gateway into Dubrovnik's Old City, on its western wall. This is the site of the peasants' dung-flinging revolt versus the evil king Joffrey. It has sights of both Bokar and Lovrijenac Fortress and Game of Thrones scenes have taken place from all angles of the bay.
2. Bokar Citadel
Used to represent King's Landing in Game of Thrones, this grand building featured in seasons two and three, and is especially visible when Varys tells Tyrion that he’s ‘quite good’ at being the hand of the king. They discuss battle-strategies to defeat Stannis Baratheon’s army while looking out to sea. Off screen, it’s possible to get closer; the two-story casemate ancient citadel is open to the public all year round. The fort is situated on the Southern part of Dubrovnik Town wall structures. Along with Minceta tower this citadel is among the key factors in the defense of the western land approach to the Town, the prime task being protection of the Pile gate bridge and the ditch.
3. St Dominika Street
Within Dubrovnik’s unspoiled walled old town, narrow streets and stone houses snake all over the town. A number of Game of Thrones market scenes and Town Watch or 'Gold Cloaks' scenes take place here, plus the murders of King Robert's illegitimate sons. In 5th season, an important character will stroll through the city naked, as a symbol penance.
4. Island of Lokrum
Couple hundred metres off Dalmatia's mainland, travellers will discover the town of Qarth, ruled by the ‘pureborn’. Otherwise known as Island of Lokrum, this is where Daenerys Targaryen gets a cold welcome from the Spice King. Lokrum is an island infront of Dubrovnik and because it takes just 15 mins by boat to get there from the Old Town. Island of Lokrum is a favourite spot for both travellers and residents of Dubrovnik . People call it a treasure island thanks to its dense pine-wood, subtropical vegetation, natural swimming-places and rich heritage.
